Short Summary: Yobito, a youkai who can mimic the voice of anyone asks Natsume to help him summon Karikami, another youkai who can repair a letter that was left by a young woman named Touko at a small shrine. Yobito tells Natsume the story of how he came to know Touko. Afterwards, Karikami repairs the letter in exchange for getting his name back from the Book of Friends. When Yobito asks Natsume to read it as he cannot understand human writing, Natsume smiles and tells Yobito what she wrote: “Thank you for telling me the truth.”
Thoughts: I know i really praise this show, but it’s hard to find problems with this series. This episode was a classic Natsume episode: a one-shot side story about a youkai and a human with a very heartwarming ending. It’s tough to be a youkai who forms a bond with a human – as humans live short lives, while the youkai live forever. You’re left wondering if Natsume having the ability to see the youkai is a blessing (as a means of opening himself up to others) or a curse (the fact that many of the youkai he sees disappears shortly after). It’s a tough call to make, and i wonder how the manga covers this but overall i’m pleased to not only see a rare fourth season from this show, but back-to-back episodes that have clearly delivered. A little premature, but as of now i’m ranking the 4th season slightly above the third with the overall rank being Natsume Season 1, Season 4, Season 3 and Season 2 from best to good. I won’t say worst, i haven’t encountered a Natsume episode or season that deserves to be called that, but i felt season 2 was the weakest of the four but it is still a great season nevertheless.
Those of you who are interested in seeing this series, start watching it! The first three seasons are on Crunchyroll, marathon it!
