***update

This will be stickied to the main post for quite a while, as key information such as airdates and such have not been revealed for most of these series. I will update all information as it becomes available. If i missed any series or if I made a mistake, let me know! On to a very very long look at Spring 2012..

Spring is fast approaching and with it comes a new crop of series. I was surprised when Winter’s series turned out to be actually worthwhile and not the usual snooze season. However, Spring looks to be quite dull and bland from the get-go already. Now that doesn’t mean there won’t be a few surprises but as it stands nothing really grabs my interest besides the sequels and two particular series.

Jormungand

Director: Keitarou Motonaga (Katanagatari, School Days)
Character Designs: Kyuuta Sakai (Steins;Gate, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni)
Animation Production: White Fox (Steins;Gate, Katanagatari)

Cast:

Koko Hekmatyar – Shizuka Itou (Hinagiku – Hayate no Gotoku, Lenalee – D.Gray-man)
Johnathan – Mutsumi Tamura (Sonya – Kill Me Baby, young Jinta – Ano Hana)
Rehm – Unshou Ishizuka (Hohenheim – Fullmetal Alchemist, Dojima – Persona 4, Sergei – Gundam 00)
Sofia Valmet – Sayaka Ohara (Beatrice – Umineko no Naku Koro ni – Margaret – Persona 4)

Synopsis: The series follows Koko Hekmatyar, a young arms dealer who sells weapons under HCLI, a weapons corporation. As one of the company’s unofficial weapon sellers, she secretly sells weapons in many countries while avoiding the local authorities and law enforcements as most of her work is actually illegal under international law. Traveling with her is her team of bodyguards who are mostly composed of ex-military veterans. Her latest addition to her crew is Jonah, a seemingly emotionless child soldier who is skilled in combat yet ironically hates arms dealers. Jonah joins Koko as he wishes to find the arms dealer responsible for his family’s death. What follows is Koko and her crews escapades around the world.

Other notables: Seiyuu Mutsumi Tamura as Jonah, first doing many child versions of Jinta Yadomi from Ano Hana and Kotetsu Kaburagi from Tiger and Bunny followed by a starring role as Sonya in Kill Me Baby. Yousuke Kuroda is scripting, with his track-record as diverse as any I can think of (Big Windup!, Maken-Ki, co-creator of Ano Natsu de Matteru)

Thoughts: Wow, i am really looking forward to this one. The synopsis above only made that point much more clear. White Fox is a studio i have high hopes for as their adaptations of Steins;Gate and Katanagatari were magnificent. Director is worrying as his resume includes two very very bad series (School Days and Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka) but Katanagatari was really executed well. Alot of really talented seiyuu are on board, especially Shizuka Itou who i haven’t heard since Hayate no Gotoku. Definitely going to stick with this series.

Uchuu Kyoudai

Director: Ayumu Watanabe (Nazo no Kanojo X, Doraemon)
Character Designer:
Animation Production: A-1 Pictures (Ano Hana, Ookiku Furikabutte, The iDOLM@STER)

Synopsis: One night in 2006, when they were young, the two brothers Mutta (born 1993) and Hibito (born 1996) saw what appeared to be a UFO heading for the moon. They decided that night to both become astronauts and travel out into space. In 2025, Hibito has become an astronaut, and he’s going to go to the moon. Mutta ended up following a more traditional career path with an auto development company. However, Mutta just ruined his career through a violent altercation with his boss. Now, not only has he lost his job, he appears to be blacklisted in the entire industry. Maybe this is a rare opportunity for Mutta to once again chase his childhood dream and become an astronaut like his little brother!

Cast:
Hibito Namba – Kenn (Judai/Jaden – Yu-Gi-Oh GX, Jil – Tower of Druaga)
Mutta Namba – Hitoaki Hirata (Kotetsu – Tiger & Bunny, Sanji – One Piece)
Serika Itou – Miyuki Sawashiro (Celty – Durarara!!, Shinku – Rozen Maiden)

Thoughts: A-1 Pictures is looking strong already with this and Tsuritama. I really love series that involve astronomy/space so Uchuu Kyoudai’s premise has already gotten me to give this at least three episodes. This is a series I’m really looking forward to and A-1 Pictures has been quite solid with Ano Hana and the under-rated iDOLM@STER.

Kimi to Boku. 2

Director: Mamoru Kanbe (Elfen Lied, Sora no Woto)
Character Designs: Masayuki Onchi (Aoi Hana, Cromartie High School)
Animation Production: J.C. Staff (Revolutionary Girl Utena, Toradora!)
Episodes: 13

Cast:
Shun Matsuoka – Toshiyuki Toyonaga (Mikado – Durarara!!, young Flit – Gundam AGE)
Chizuru Tachibana – Miyu Irino (Jinta – Ano Hana, Haku – Spirited Away)
Yuuta Asaba – Kouki Uchiyama (Banagher – Gundam Unicorn, Soul – Soul Eater)
Yuuki Asaba – Ryohei Kimura (Kodaka – Haganai, Takizawa – Eden of the East)
Kaname Tsukahara – Yuuki Ono (minor roles like Kiryuu from Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds)

Synopsis: The story revolves around four teens — the good-looking twins Yuuta and Yuuki Asaba, the effeminate Shun Matsuoka, and the class head Kaname Tsukahara — who have known each other since early childhood. While they are not necessarily good or bad friends, they continue to hang out well into high school. The half-Japanese transfer student Chizuru Tachibana joins the circle of friends in this comedy about the everyday life of adolescence.

Other notables: Despite poor DVD/BD sales, a second season of Kimi to Boku was announced even before the first season aired. Yes, the director worked on Elfen Lied!

Thoughts: Ah, it’s refreshing to see an honestly good J.C. Staff series once in a while. Kimi to Boku had its flaws: a weak first two episodes, but after that it took off and each episode was better than the last. It may be boring to some (just go to the Danshi Koukousei forum on AnimeSuki to see the hate for THIS show), but i found it to be one of the better slice of life series. Here’s hoping season two will expand on more of the boys’ childhoods and more Shun goodness.

Shining Hearts -Shiawase no Pan-

Director: Itsuro Kawasaki (Chrome Shelled Regios, Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu)
Animation Production: Production I.G. (Higashi no Eden, Ghost in the Shell)

Synopsis: One day, a mysterious girl named Kaguya was washed ashore the island of Wyndaria after a great storm. She encounters Rick, a swordsman who wound up working at the island’s bakery. Apparently, Kaguya is suffering from having lost her memories and emotions. In addition, the usually peaceful Wyndaria is now swarming with pirates who came seeking for the special spirit stone that is worn around Kaguya’s neck. Knowing the situation, Rick and his co-workers, Nellis, Amyl, and Aerie decided to bring back peace to island and help Kaguya regain her lost memories and emotions.

Other notables: None

Thoughts: Meh, another video game adaptation with a not-so interesting premise. I’m ruling this one out, unless the reception is high enough to watch.

Acchi Kocchi

Director: Fumitoshi Oizaki (Romeo x Juliet, Astarotte no Omocha!)
Character Designs: Atsuko Watanabe (Ookamikakushi, Nekogami Yaoyorozu)
Animation Production: AIC (Persona 4 the Animation, Sora no Otoshimono, Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai)
Episodes: One-cour

Promotional Video #1

Cast:
Io Otonashi – Nobuhiko Okamoto (Rin – Blue Exorcist, Accelerator – Raildex series)
Tsumiki Miniwa – Rumi Ookubo (minor roles)

Synopsis: Wouldn’t you just love to poke in a relationship between two young high schoolers who have a subtle distance between each other? Of course you would. Tsumiki and Io have this subtle distance that anyone would want to jump in between just to bug them. That’s what the other characters are there for. Tsumiki, being a tsundere and all, won’t be honest about her feelings toward Io. Io on the other hand is unaware of Tsumiki’s feelings, hence the subtle distance between the two. Now, let’s watch these two and see what events await them…

Other notables: None.

Thoughts: Hmm, i’m not sure how this will turn out. Though this is a 4-koma adaptation, i have my doubts as fellow 4-k’er Kill Me Baby has been quite disappointing and AIC is even worse when it comes to animation. Honestly, if the characters are likeable enough, i’ll give it a try. But if it airs on a less cluttered day (Wednesday!..or Tuesday) than the typical Thursday-Sunday area, i’ll probably check a few episodes out.

Haiyoru! Nyaruko-san

Director: Tsuyoshi Nagasawa (Kyou no Go no Ni, MM!)
Character Designs: Shintetsu Takiyama (Key animator for MM! and Softenni)
Animation Production: Xebec (Pandora Hearts, To-Love Ru)

Synopsis: The story of Haiyore! Nyaruko-san centers around Nyaruko, a formless Cthulhu deity of chaos (Nyarlathotep) who can take on the shape of a seemingly ordinary silver-haired girl. Mahiro Yasaka is a normal high school who is chased by aliens one night, until Nyaruko saves him.

Cast:
Nyarlko – Kana Asumi (Mio – Ano Natsu, Popura – Working!!)
Mahiro Yasaka – Eri Kitamura (Sayaka – Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, Ami – Toradora!)

Other notable info: Eri Kitamura voicing a male character…WHAT? I haven’t heard her in a male role before. I guess that counts as being interesting..

Thoughts: Oh looky it’s the typical Xebec series right down to their style of character designs. At this point, I don’t know enough about this show besides the staff and cast. Maybe I’ll give it one episode at least, who knows?

Nazo no Kanojo X

Director: Ayumu Watanabe (various Doraemon series)
Character Designs: Kenichi Konishi (Bokurano, Tokyo Godfathers)
Animation Production: Hoods Entertainment (Seikon no Qwaser)

Synopsis: One day, a strange transfer student appears before Tsubaki. Urabe Mikoto is an antisocial girl, whose hobby is just sleeping during class-breaks. One day, Tsubaki goes to wake her up and accidentally tastes her drool… And gets hooked on that! After that, he starts going out with her and gets to know her better. Her second hobby, as it turns out, is carrying around scissors in her panties and cutting paper into flowers…

Other notables: Hoods Entertainment, it sounds dirty to say because they’ve worked on extreme ecchi series like Qwaser and Manyuu Hikenchou. One of the staff comes from a lot of Shaft series and the main girl carries weird things in her panties = Bakemonogatari?

Thoughts: Nothing, nothing at all.

Medaka Box

Director: Shouji Saeki (This Ugly Yet Beautiful World, He Is My Master)
Character Designs:
Animation Production: Gainax (Neon Genesis Evangelion, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann)

Cast:
Medaka Kurokami – Aki Toyosaki (Yui – K-ON!, Nako – Hanasaku Iroha)
Zenkichi Hitoyoshi – Yuuki Ono (Kaname – Kimi to Boku)

Other cast and seiyuu announcements are pending

Synopsis: “Medaka Kurokami is an exceptional first year student at Hanokiwa Academy who got elected as president of the student council with a smashing 98% of the votes. Extremely intelligent, strong, and rich; she wants to help anyone in need. To do that, she introduces a suggestion box that allows any student to contact her. Later known as the “Medaka Box”, it will bring forth incredible challenges to Kurokami and her friends of the student council.”

Other notables: This is an adaptation of a very popular manga series created by Nisio Isin, noted for the Monogatari series of light novels and their adaptations.

Thoughts: Well, if it isn’t Nisioisin. This guy really loves wordplay, as noted by his hit Monogatari novel series. Of those, i’ve really come to like Katanagatari for doing a much better job in terms of character development, intricate wordplay and seriousness that the more popular Bakemonogatari (and also Nise) lacks. I do like what he does, i just couldn’t stand Bakemonogatari’s lazy animation and flat characters. But this kind of reminds me of Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon with the lead character in the student council, wacky antics and large cast. Plus you have Gainax which adds up to (probably) a whole lot of crazy. I’ll give it a few episodes.

Accel World

Director: Masakazu Ohara (Mai-HiMe/Otome)
Character Designs: Yukiko Aibei (Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon)
Animation Production: Sunrise (Gundam, Horizon, Code Geass)
Episodes: Two-cour

Cast:
Haruaki Akita – Yuuki Kaji (Shu – Guilty Crown, Shion – No.6)
Kuroyukihime – Sachika Misawa (minor roles)
Chiyuri Kurashima – Aki Toyosaki (Yui – K-ON!, Nako – Hanasaku Iroha)
Takumu Mayuzumi – Shintarou Asanuma (Tsuda – Seitokai Yakuindono)

Other notables: Yes the fat kid is the main character, voiced by none other than Yuki Kaji! Speaking of Guilty Crown, Hiroyuki Yoshino is supervising here. His track record sucks, and his handling of Guilty Crown’s pacing makes me very nervous about this series.

Thoughts: This could be the next Guilty Crown or Horizon, I’m sure of it. It has the most interesting premise this season and having a character like Haruaki being the main character paired along such a gorgeous girl is quite interesting. Of course, that means i get to hear more Yuuki Kaji: i just hope this kid isn’t too annoying. I already hear this kind of voice in Ouma Shu and I don’t think i want to hear any more.

Tsuritama

Director: Kenji Nakamura (Kuchuu Buranko, [C], Mononoke)
Character Designs: Atsuya Uki (Director of Cencoroll)
Animation Production: A-1 Pictures (Ano Hana, Ookiku Furikabutte, The iDOLM@STER)
Episodes: 11

Cast:
Yuki Sanada – Ryouta Oosaka (First time seiyuu)
Haru – Miyu Irino (Jinta – Ano Hana, Chizuru – Kimi to Boku)
Natsuki Usami – Kouki Uchiyama (Banagher – Gundam Unicorn, Yuuta – Kimi to Boku)
Akira Agarkar Yamada – Tomokazu Sugita (Gintoki – Gintama, Kyon – Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya)

Synopsis: “In Enoshima, Yuki is a high school student who’s never been good at making real friends thanks to his abnormally poor communication skills. Haru is the self-styled alien who decides to teach Yuki to fish. Natsuki is an irritable born-and-raised local. Akira is the mysterious Indian who watches them all from a distance. These four meet, fish, and find big adventures on their little island.”

Other notable info: Kenji Nakamura’s fifth stint as a director for a noitaminA series. Never seen his work, though they have been favorably recieved.

Thoughts: So yeah, i’ve never seen any of Nakamura’s works but I hear they’re very creative and that alone makes me want to see this. I’m so glad there’s been more original series, but at the same time they’ve been kinda weak (like Guilty Crown and Symphogear).

Zetman

Director: Osamu Nabeshima (D.Gray-man)
Character Designs: Hirotoshi Takaya (Eyeshield 21, Kekkaishi)
Animation Production: TMS Entertainment (D.Gray-man, Brave 10)

Cast:
Jin Kanzaki – Romi Paku (young) | Daisuke Namikawa (older) (Yuu Narukami – Persona 4, Waver Velvet – Fate/Zero)
Kouga Amagi – Yuki Kaida (young) | Mamoru Miyano (older) (Light – Death Note, Okabe – Steins;Gate)
Konoha Amagi – Kana Hanazawa (Kanade/Tenshi – Angel Beats, Mayuri – Steins;Gate)
Hanako Tanaka – Mariya Ise (Killua – Hunter x Hunter 2011, Yarizui – Ben-To)

Synopsis: “Jin, a mysterious kid with a halo carved in his hand, and extraordinary fighting skills, lives with his grandfather in a beggar’s community. In other place, the old scientist Amagi is searching for professor Kanzaki, to ask him for the whereabouts of the “player” -a kind of genetic altered humans- Zet, which they created some years ago. Soon, Jin and his grandfather are attacked by a mysterious man who turns into a monster. The connection between professor Amagi and professor Kanzaki, seems to connect also young Jin to the mystery of the “players”, and Zet.”

Thoughts: Hmm, here’s a really intriguing series. I like the art style, it’s more retro and reading the synopsis only makes it even more retro-like. I haven’t seen anything from TMS since D.Gray-man (which i ought to finish, eventually) but damn look at that cast: Daisuke Namikawa, Mamoru Miyano AND Kana Hanazawa? But besides the cast, i’m curious to see how this series will play out because from what i’ve heard the D.Gray-man anime ended abruptly with a lot of angry fans wanting more, will Zetman have the same problem?

Fate/Zero 2

Director: Ei Aoki (Hourou Musuko, Kara no Kyoukai 1: Fukan Fuukei)
Character Designs: Atsushi Ikariya and Tomonori Sudou (Kara no Kyoukai movies)
Animation Production: ufotable (Kara no Kyoukai movies)
Episodes: 12

Synopsis: Continuation of fall’s Fate/Zero. Caster has launched an attack on Fuyuki City and the rest of the masters along with their servants try to defeat him for the prize of receiving more command spells. The rift between Kiritsugu Emiya and his servant Saber only deepens…(written by me)

Cast:
Saber – Ayako Kawasumi (Alice – Pandora Hearts, Nodame – Nodame Cantabile)
Kiritsugu Emiya – Rikiya Koyama (Narrator – Mouretsu Pirates)
Kirei Kotomine – Jouji Nakata (Alucard – Hellsing, Nvnsgr – Carnival Phantasm)
Irisviel von Einzbern – Sayaka Ohara (Beatrice – Umineko no Naku Koro ni, Ezra – Fairy Tail)

Thoughts: I’m extremely excited and anxious to see what will happen after ufotable gave us the most annoying type of cliffhanger I’ve ever seen. Everything about this series is done right: each character no matter how likely they are to win the Holy Grail has been given a ton of background, the strategic maneuvering of a select group of masters has really thrown the entire battle into a mess and even the servants themselves aren’t as willing to fight for such a lucrative prize. Not only am I confident that the second half will deliver, i expect ufotable to bring their A+ game and give us a riveting experience that Gen Urobuchi started with the novel and shame Studio Deen for their blatant mishandling of Fate/stay night.

Ginga e Kickoff!

Director: Unknown
Character Designs:
Animation Production: TYO Animation

Synopsis: The story follows a boy who was in a soccer team, but it was disbanded due to not enough players. However, after the boy meets a female professional soccer player, he aims to bring his soccer team back. The anime is an adaptation of a 2006 soccer novel Ginga no World Cup (Galactic World Cup) by Hiroto Kawabata.  The anime will premiere on Saturday, April 7 at 9:30 a.m., and all 18 professional soccer teams in Japan’s top-tier J1 League are collaborating on a special segment. The segment will have boys and girls playing against actual J-Leaguers.

Other notables: TYO Animation was formerly known as Hal Film Maker, producers of the Aria series and others. The series is being pushed by the NHK broadcast station, known mainly for their educational programs.

Thoughts: Another soccer anime? Honestly, I dropped Area no Kishi because it just failed to deliver on anything meaningful and the soundtrack for the series was downright awful. Maybe Ginga won’t be as disappointing but there’s far more series this season that are interesting for me to spend any time on another sports anime who’s name isn’t Chihayafuru or Ookiku Furikabutte.

Sakamichi no Apollon

Director: Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo)
Character Designs: Nobuteru Yuki (Escaflowne)
Music: Yoko Kanno (Cowboy Bebop, Macross Frontier)
Animation Production: Tezuka Production and MAPPA

Cast:
Kaoru Nishimi – Ryohei Kimura (Takizawa – Higashi no Eden, Shouma – Mawaru Penguindrum)
Yoshimasa Hosoya – Sentarou Kawabuchi (Arata – Chihayafuru, Shichika – Katanagatari)
Yuuka Nanri – Ritsuko Mukae
Aya Endo – Yurika Fukahori (Sheryl – Macross Frontier,
Junichi Suwabe – Junichi Katsuragi (Archer – Fate/stay night, Komuro – Highschool of the Dead)
Nobuhiko Okamoto – Seiji
Amina Satou – Mariko (member of AKB48)

Synopsis: Nishimi Kaoru has moved from city to city and school to school because of his father’s job. So the first day at his new school was just routine for him. Being intellectual and the new transfer student, he has always been seen as an outcast and all Kaoru had to do was bear it until the next time he moved. But things were slightly different this time. First, he started to get close to the class president, Mukae Ritsuko, and, secondly, unlikely as it seemed, grew closer to Kawabuchi Sentaro. Sentaro was infamous for getting into fights, skipping class and was an overall bad boy. Strangely enough, the three of them find common ground in music, namely jazz, and Kaoru finds himself actually enjoying the new town.

Other notables: A lot of old school staff are behind this one. Besides Watanabe and Kanno’s work in Cowboy Bebop, there is also Escaflowne character designer Nobuteru Yuki and the animation is a joint between MAPPA (created by former Madhouse staff, many of which worked on Satoshi Kon’s films) and Tezuka Production, “creator of anime” Osamu Tezuka. On top of all of that, this is being aired on noitaminA.

Thoughts: I’m definitely setting my sights on this one. The staff is definitely some of the best known people in the industry, and the fact that its a noitaminA series means it’s going to be a huge topic in the blogosphere. It’s a very interesting premise that revolves around jazz music – a type of music rarely seen in most anime series. I’ve never seen any of Shinichi Watanabe’s works besides his role as music producer for Michiko to Hatchin and Cowboy Bebop remains one of the many series that I’m going to watch eventually. Regardless, this is going to be one of the biggest Spring series for sure.

Sankarea

Director: Mamoru Hatakeyama (no resume at all??)
Character Designs: Kyuuta Sakai (Steins;Gate, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni)
Animation Production: Studio Deen (Fate/stay night, Higurashi/Umineko, Junjou Romantica)

Cast:
Sanka Rea – Maaya Uchida (another newbie)
Chihiro Furuya – Ryohei Kimura (Shouma – Mawaru Penguindrum, Yuuki – Kimi to Boku)

Other notable info: nano.RIPE will sing the opening theme, a group that many people equally hate and love for almost the same reasons. Director is a total unknown, combined with the general ineptness of Studio Deen makes this a very interesting series to look out for. Noboru Takagi is supervising script writing, his resume is quite solid with writing all 16 episodes of Baccano, some really good episodes of Natsume Yuujinchou but his work on Durarara wasn’t as stellar.

Thoughts: Lol, Deen. I actually found out that a lot of staff from Deen worked on Steins;Gate..talk about the best kind of irony. But anyways, i’m actually considering watching this because of a couple of interesting staff choices and the premise does sound a bit interesting.

Tasogare Otome x Amnesia

Director: Shin Oonuma (Baka to Test, ef – a tale of memories/melodies, C3)
Character Designs: Yukiko Ban (Brave 10)
Animation Production: Silver Link (Baka to Test, C3)
Episodes: One-cour (?)

Other notables: Shin Oonuma’s third stint as director for the Silver Link animation studio. He has worked under Shaft’s Akiyuki Shinbou and also uses visual techniques similar to Shinbo such as in the ef series.

Cast:
Yuuko Kanoe – Yumi Hara (Takane – iDOLM@STER)
Kirie Kanoe – Eri Kitamura (Sayaka – Madoka Magica, Ami – Toradora!)
Teiichi Niiya – Yonaga Tsubasa (Mihashi – Ookiku Furikabutte, Desk-tomu – Chihayafuru)
Momoe Okonogi – Misato Fukuen (Rika – Haganai, Shinooka – Ookiku Furikabutte)

Thoughts: I’m skeptical of this one. Silver Link’s last anime series, C3 was just weak save for the visuals. I can’t be sure how this one will turn out. Many assumed Shaft would animate, Silver Link is pretty much Shaft-lite. Now C3 and Baka to Test Ni weren’t that bad, but the problem was they weren’t that good either. Will Amnesia follow in their pattern? Honestly, i’ll check it out anyways because Silver Link makes their shows look gorgeous and there’s the potential for greatness.

Natsuiro Kiseki

Director: Seiji Mizushima (UN-GO, Gundam 00, Fullmetal Alchemist 2003)
Character Designs: Yuichi Tanaka (To Aru Majutsu no Index, Last Exile, To Aru Kagaku no Railgun)
Animation Production: Sunrise (Gundam, Code Geass, Horizon)
Episodes: 12

Cast:
Rinko – Aki Toyosaki (Yui – K-ON!, Yuina – Hanasaku Iroha)
Saki – Ayahi Takagaki (Feldt – Gundam 00, Mitsuba – Mitsudomoe)
Yuka – Haruka Tomatsu (Anaru – Ano Hana, Ichika – Ano Natsu)
Natsumi – Minako Kotobuki (Tsumugi – K-ON!, Yuuko – A-Channel)

Other notables: The girl group Sphere (Aki Toyosaki, Haruka Tomatsu, Ayahi Takagaki, Minako Kotobuki) is singing the OP/ED, various inserts and voicing the main characters. The staff has strong resumes, such as Mizushima, script writer Urahata (Horizon, A-Channel) and fellow scriptwriter Murai (seasons 3 and 4 of Natsume Yuujinchou.)

Thoughts: What is this show even about? There’s been nothing with regards to a synopsis and quite frankly it does look like this series is more about promoting Sphere than anything else.

Hyou-ka

Director: Yasuhiro Takemoto (Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya)
Character Designs: Futoshi Nishiya (Nichijou)
Animation Production: Kyoto Animation (Haruhi Suzumiya, Nichijou, Full Metal Panic)

Synopsis: “The story follows a boy named Houtarou who is not assertive about getting involved, but was ordered by his older sister to join the classic literature club. In the club, he gets close to the truth about an incident, involving a female member’s uncle, which happened 33 years ago. The “energy-saving” boy is joined by an inquisitive girl in this adolescent mystery.”

Other notables: Has KyoAni done something like this before? Besides FMP, they usually do comedy..Oh and one of the main characters is voiced by Daisuke Sakaguchi thus that character is already going to be the comic relief one. How do i know this? Well he’s voiced Shinpachi in Gintama, Souta in Guilty Crown and Sunohara from Clannad along with many other examples. He always seems to voice unlikeable characters, poor guy.

Cast:
Houtarou Oreki – Yuuichi Nakamura (Kyousuke – Ore no Imouto, Abe – Ookiku Furikabutte)
Eru Chitanda – Satomi Satou (Ritsu – K-ON!, Manami – Ore no Imouto)
Mayaka Ibara – Ai Kayano (Inori – Guilty Crown, Menma – Ano Hana)
Satoshi Fukube – Daisuke Sakaguchi (Shinpachi – Gintama, Uso – Victory Gundam)

Thoughts: This series sounds very similar to Another and i’m a bit reluctant to watch another (hah!) series that tries too hard to be scary with deaths that make Final Destination blush. But i’m also interested with KyoAni being involved as it’s usually rare for them to be working on this kind of a series. The female character looks to be more exciting to watch than Misaki, and Houtarou looks to be less annoying that Kouichi which is a huge plus. I’m glad KyoAni is doing something different and the guy who directed the Haruhi movie leading this, I’m more confident than I was about this series before.

Eureka Seven: AO

Director: Tomoki Kyoda (Eureka Seven + Movie)
Character Designs: Kenichi Yoshida (credited as original character design), Hiroyuki Oda (OreImo)
Animation Production: BONES (Fullmetal Alchemist, Darker than Black)

Cast:
Ao Fukai – Yuutaro Honjou (minor roles)
Arata Naru – Kanako Miyamoto (minor roles)
Truth (?) – Kazuhiko Inoue (Madara/Nyanko-sensei – Natsume Yuujinchou, Kakashi – Naruto)
Fleur Blanc – Ayaka Ohashi (first time seiyuu)
Elena Peoples – Chiaki Omigawa (Minko – Hanasaku Iroha, Maka – Soul Eater)

Other notables: Sequel of 2005 mecha/romance series. Naoki Sato, who composed the music for the original series has been replaced. There is no indication that Dai Sato will be back to scriptwrite either.

Thoughts: Oh boy, this is gonna be wordy. I watched this series a year ago when everyone i knew had nothing but praise. Of course, being extremely picky with what i watched i decided to give this show a series. What ended up happening was that i was extremely disappointed at how awful the pacing was in this show. I can’t understand why someone like Dai Sato, known for Cowboy Bebop and Ergo Proxy could screw up such a series. Now there’s no confirmation that he’ll be back for this series which i’m a little torn about. He did some good things with this series, mainly the first 30 episodes of E7 were really great and definitely fun. But after that, it just got too serious for its own good and the pacing was out of whack, like introducing the main character’s sister with only 5 episodes to go? That, and some really good characters mysteriously left the series and came back also mysteriously.  The good news (for me anyways) is that Renton and Eureka don’t look like they’re coming back which is a great thing as i found them quite annoying for most of the series. Renton was more annoying to the point he’s in my top 5 all-time worst characters list. Too whiny, too angsty and with that gone (hopefully) the series will be able to move much more forward. Bad news is that the Gekko crew doesn’t look like they’re coming back either and I’m disappointed as their antics were much fun to watch especially Holland and Talho. So far, it’s a mixed bag with an equal amount of bad and good things to look forward to. But the real question mark is the length: will it be another 50 episode series or shorter? If it’s 50 and there’s no Dai Sato then i’m most likely going to watch, despite my criticisms stated above. I hope BONES can wow me again, because my patience with them is running thin..

My Thoughts on Spring’s Offerings:

It’s weaker than Winter, but it’s also the most diverse and unpredictable season this year. A lot of series already look promising (Jormungand, Sakamichi, Hyou-ka) while others look to be quite mediocre (Accel World, Eureka Seven AO, Natsuiro) but it is far too early to tell for sure what will succeed and what will fail. Of course, many will use the argument that Winter is inherently weaker than the other seasons based on previous seasons but honestly only two series from this Winter have been extremely disappointing. To get the sequels out of the way: I’m extremely excited for Fate/Zero, and I know that the death count is going to be ridiculously high for sure and with ufotable’s extremely competent staff it’s a recipe for total success. The under-dog of Fall, Kimi to Boku returns with the same whimper it premiered with and while it started off slow, the series only got better each episode and I hope J.C. Staff continues to push this show even higher. For the newbies, i’m most excited for Jormungand: will this be the next Steins;Gate (both by White Fox, in spring) in terms of overall favorable reception or will it fizzle a la Guilty Crown? I can say for certain that with White Fox we’re getting a pretty competent staff with Ano Natsu creator Kuroda Yousuke as the scriptwriter as one of the main gears in this system. The new noitaminA lineup of original series Tsuritama and Watanabe/Kanno duo team of Sakamichi also will definitely be a hot topic in the blog-sphere and I hope that noitaminA sticks with these kinds of series from now on.

The more intriguing series would probably be Tsuritama, Sakamichi no Apollon, Jormungand and Tasogare Otome x Amnesia. These look to be quite fun or maybe mysterious, though Amnesia suffers from a lackluster staff only known for being similar to Shaft and their style of animation.

Spring is going to be a bit busy for me as i’m starting college next month, so the number of blogged series might drop by one or two. As of now, air dates have not been confirmed for most of these series and until then I can only give you guys what i may blog as opposed to a firm commitment, but that leads me to my next post within a post…

Another Blogger?

Well, as it stands I’ll be busy a bit more as demonstrated by my super-late Symphogear #07 post. In order to relieve said stress, I’ve been thinking of adding another blogger to the site. If you are interested, rather than post here send me an email at webkid94@gmail.com with your username, a bit about your background and either a link to a episodic blog post or a writing sample.  Also include what series you will be interested in, if we have the same interests we’ll work it out so no worries if you pick the same things to blog as me!

Now, for the last part of the super-mega post:

What I’m watching, guaranteed: Fate/Zero 2, Kimi to Boku. 2, Tsuritama, Sakamichi no Apollon, Jormungand

What I’ll give a three episode test: Uchuu Kyoudai, Tasogare Otome x Amnesia, Medaka Box, Zetman, Sankarea, Natsuiro Kiseki, Hyou-ka, Acchi Kocchi, Eureka Seven: AO, Accel World, Haiyoru! Nyaruko-san

What I MAY blog: Fate/Zero 2, Tsuritama or Sakamichi, Accel World, Hyou-ka, Jormungand

As before, I will give one episode of generally every series on here a blog post and make my decision to blog then. What are you, the readers, interested in and why?

  1. Oddly enough I thought that the Spring 2012 season would be one of the worst seasons to date, yet I find myself interested in a lot of titles. I’m for sure going to be watching Jormungand, Uchuu Kyoudai, Medaka Box, Tsuritama, Fate/Zero 2, Sakamichi no Apollon (yes, more Josei)…actually 90% of everything you’ve listed here. Still not sure how many series I’m going to blog about since a lot of things show promise. I’ll probably be making a post like this in the next few weeks (but I doubt it will be as detailed as your’s).

I like the idea of you recruiting another blogger to your site. It can allow for a different set of ideas, and just a general diversity to the blog’s posts. That’s not to say you haven’t been doing a great job so far, but it would be nice to see another blogger. Maybe I should do the same since my blogging partner has been rather lazy as of late…

    • I’m really not sure what to do blogging-wise, though i’m leaning towards Tsuritama or Sakamichi but I can’t see myself blogging both of them at the same time.

Yeah, I’ve been thinking about another blogger because I want the site to be more diverse, preferably someone can cover the ecchi/harem series as a perfect opposite to myself or just more depth.

  2. Oh cool, I’m really glad I wandered over here, as I didn’t know about Jormungand and it looks really interesting.

“What are you, the readers, interested in and why?”

Jormungand: very intrigued. The story seems like it might be a good drama with some action.
Uchuu Kyoudai: Why? I’m a science geek. This show appears to be going the “realistic” route and that has my attention.
Haiyoru! Nyaruko-san: This will probably turn out badly, but I have an interest in things related to Lovecraft’s stories.
Medaka Box: I’ll check it out jus to see if it’s fun.
    Accel World: Just curious.
Tsuritama: Looks like it will be a quirky, oddball story, which I like.
Zetman: The plot seems really contrived, but if I avoided shows based on that I would never have watched Fate / Zero or Rinne no Lagrange.
Fate/Zero 2: excellent drama, 3d characters, well executed fight scenes, and two very evil characters I very much want to see go down.
Sankarea: I will not admit to having an interest in this one. Ever.
Tasogare Otome x Amnesia: Just curious, not really enough to go on.
Hyou-ka: I don’t get the impression it will be another Another (not that it would be bad), just a mystery story being investigated when the kids aren’t otherwise doing what anime boys and girls their age do.

  3. This season looks so weak. So weak that I don’t even want to watch any of the shows. I am sure I will end up watching at least the first EP of some of the shows, but geez, what a shitty season

I am with you on Eureka 7. God what a bad show. I heard nothing but praise for it, and it was crap. Not only that, it had one of the MOST annoying male leads I have ever seen. If there ever was the embodiment of the phrase “little bitch”, it was that faggot Renton. God, just thinking about him makes me so angry.

  4. thanks for your blog post. i was able to see a pretty decent list of the airing shows next season. i haven’t fully decided on what to really watch but after reading your post, here’s my decision:
    *surely be watching:
    -Kimi to Boku S2
    -Accel World
    -Tsuritama
    -Zetman
    -Sankarea
    -Tasogare Otome x Amnesia
    -Hyou-ka
    *will check out:
    -Acchi Kocchi
    -Nazo no Kanojo X
    -Sakamichi no Apollon
    -Natsuiro Kiseki

  6. I’m looking forward to Sankarea and Fate/zero 2. This season isn’t bad at all. But im mostly going to watch the first episodes of all anime this season, just to give them a chance.
